crap crap crap
This just happened to my iphone. It’s apparently called a dead strip. The bottom row (grey area of the home screen) has stopped responding to touch. I can unlock it, so it’s not totally dead. But none of the buttons work on the bottom half inch of my phone. I already did a factory restore and nada. Looks like I’m heading to the Apple store tomorrow. The unfortunate part is I...

home
For my birthday last night, we went to home, Richard Blais’s restaurant in Atlanta. The space has been a few different restaurants in the past couple of years (first Seeger’s, then Posh). Home is a good name because it’s an adequate description of the building. It really is a small house on West Paces. The hostess had a note that it was my birthday and we were seated...

stickshifts and safetybelts
I am learning how to drive stick, and after a frustrating first session, I can now stop and re-start without stalling (have yet to try this on a hill). I also drove about a mile through my neighborhood, including some shifting. After getting through the aggravating phase where I thought my mom was going to get my car because I’d never learn stick, things are looking up. More practice...

i spend an inordinate amount of time thinking...
Seriously, people. Robots. Because I’m a closet sci-fi dork (or due to this blog, not so closeted), I like to think about the future. And I’m not talking about thinking about the future in the “what am I going to do with my life/planning my wedding” sense, but in the flying cars sense. I am entirely convinced the human race is going to die out due to brain cancer from our...

cuerno
When Eric came in town to visit, I picked a restaurant I thought he’d like. We went to Cuerno, a 6-month old tapas place in Midtown Atlanta. The first problem occurred when we couldn’t figure out where to park. There was no sign for valet in front of the restaurant. We drove around the block and pulled into the parking garage that was in the same building as the restaurant. There was a...

five guys
The first burger I ever had in a restaurant was at In n’ Out Burger in California. Five Guys is giving In n’ Out Burger a run for its money on the East Coast. The chain started in Virginia. The first time I has ever in a Five Guys was in DC. Apparently the chain has spread to Atlanta now. It’s a burger joint, and burgers are pretty much all they do. They make everything with...

room at TWELVE
My mom and I went to Room at TWELVE as a part of Atlanta Restaurant Week, which meant we were having a $25 prix fixe three-course dinner. Thus, I had a limited selection of their offerings. I started with a cocktail, vanilla sky. It had vodka, lime and mint and tasted roughly like a mojito, delicious. I started with arugula salad with snap peas, goat cheese, walnuts, dried cherries & balsamic...

taqueria del sol
This is another Atlanta legend when it comes to restaurants. Before the restaurant even opens, there’s a line. Every night. Taqueria del Sol comes with a routine. You wait in line. You are allowed to buy a pitcher of margs while you wait in line. You order and then you sit. If you sit at a table before you order, you mess everything up, and you will be told to move your butt. (image from...

flying biscuit
The Flying Biscuit is my favorite place to get breakfast/brunch in Atlanta. I also own the cookbook (gift from my mom last Christmas). It’s not a fancy place, but the food is to die for. There are multiple locations, but they all have the same vibe, hippy chic. The restaurant offers SOYsage instead of sausage, and they serve turkey bacon. (photo stolen from flickr) Obviously, from the...

the brick store pub
The Brick Store Pub is a small bar/restaurant in Decatur, GA (near where I live now). An extensive list of beers on draught, including a whole list of Belgians, sets them apart from the crowd in Atlanta. This place reminds me of Hopleaf in Chicago. Brian Lynch showed the Brick Store to me last week when we stopped in for beers and shared a plate of baked brie. The service was prompt and friendly,...

“I don’t e-mail. I’ve never felt the particular need to e-mail.”
– John McCain This article has details on how internet-illiterate McCain is. I think it’s appalling that someone could run for President without knowing how to use email or the internet. It makes him such an easy target. I believed this humor column before I read the credentials at the bottom.

magazines
I bought the last newstand issues of my favorite magazines that I’ll have to buy for two years. I subscribed to Wired and Elle Decor the other day, 2 years for $20. I spent $10 today alone on the two mags. But, worth it…Julia Allison edition of Wired, and I always love Elle Decor.

mobileme
Just got an email about Apple’s new MobileMe service. I don’t think it’s something I need. I use GMail, so my emails are already synced. I don’t make that many changes to my contacts/calendar, and when I do I can just plug my phone into my computer to sync them. Since I only have two devices, that’s not that much of a hassle. I share photos on facebook and my blog,...

car search '08 continues
So, I think we’ve narrowed it down and are looking for a MINI Cooper. Because the new ones won’t get here until October/November, we’re looking at used ones. The dealership is trying to charge more for a used one than it costs to build the exact same car new. That’s a testament to the car’s popularity, but not a price I’m willing to pay. I found this one on...

WatchWatch
New season of the Hills starts soon. I swear this show is the most mindless thing on television, but for some reason it’s culturally relevant. I refuse to “pick teams” and would never utter the phrase “omg, i’m obsessed with the hills”, but I do watch it. I mean come on, the carefully crafted melodrama is too good to miss. Check out the shot at the end where...

tea v. coffee
I have an ongoing tea versus coffee debate. Tea was my first preference, and I know infinitely more about tea and am a tea snob. I have recently gotten into coffee (bought a French press, etc), but I know relatively little about coffee. I enjoy both, but while I can drink my tea black, I need cream and sugar/splenda to enjoy my coffee. So, in healthy terms, I think tea is better for me. For now,...

tonight's plan
Zus had to reschedule dinner. Too tired after camping all weekend with her new squeeze. Instead I’m grabbing dinner with my other friend Amanda, and we’re going to attempt to see Dark Knight.

Finally getting around to buying a coffee table and end table today. My life is so exciting I just can’t stand it. I am meeting Zus tonight for dinner. Yay for some human interaction.

I don’t feel like doing work, but to motivate myself, I’m using candy. Yes, I am four years old. When I was in Germany I bought a few of my favorite hard to find candy bars. You’ve probably seen Ritter Sport bars in Whole Foods or other gourmet stores, but they don’t usually have all of the flavors. They’re German, and the best flavor is unquestionably Knusperflakes....

after a long day of shopping...
So far the decision is between the MINI Cooper and the Acura TSX. MINI: I think it’s cute now, but I’m not sure how I’d feel about it in 5 years. It’s cheap and really fuel efficient. There’s a used one I like, but to get a new one would be about a 6-8 week wait because they’re sold out everywhere. I’d want it in chili red with a white roof. Acura:...
