alinea article
While I’m on an article posting binge, here is a New Yorker profile of Grant Achatz. What’s interesting to me is that at the time this article was writte, Achatz was in the process of creating some of the dishes I had the opportunity to try last spring. (the strawberry-white chocolate-nicoise olive dish; the hot potato, cold potato; the wagyu beef “centerpiece”) ...

weekend dining
Eric’s coming to town for the weekend, which means I have an excuse to go to a restaurant! He and I will be dining at Watershed on Friday evening. Chef Scott Peacock is well-known for his modern take on southern classics. Then- sadly after Eric leaves on Sunday- my mom is taking Christine and I to the symphony. After the symphony we’ll be having dinner at South City Kitchen. Two...

new to me but old to the world
schickli: The Kiss Communicator “The Kiss Communicator is an IDEO concept prototype that allows you to blow a kiss to your beloved when s/he’s at the other part of the world. To let a partner know that you are thinking of her or him, you squeeze the Communicator gently. It responds with a slight glow to invite you to blow into it and create your “message” in the form of an animated light...

StumbleUpon
I just joined/installed StumbleUpon. I’d seen the icons by articles and on various websites, but I had no idea what it was. I caught my brother using it last night and he explained it to me. You join the website/service and check some boxes indicating your interests. Then, download the toolbar (my least favorite part of the whole thing, I hate having a cluttered browser) and start clicking....

schwa
This article is one of the best I’ve read in a while. I never got the chance to go to schwa, and if you read the article, I think you’ll understand why it’ll probably be difficult to go there any time soon, probably next to impossibly unless I move back to Chicago, but that article has pushed it to the top of my list. The food sounds amazing, and with a staff of three, the...

movies
I saw Revolutionary Road last night. I’d definitely recommend it, especially for Kate Winslet’s acting. I’ll jump on the bandwagon and say she should have gotten an Oscar nom for it. However, disclaimer, it’s definitely kinda depressing (especially if your future plans eventually include getting married, having children, or moving to the suburbs). So, I’m currently...

match strategy
So far “match” has decided to let others initiate communication. Match figures if potential dates are emailing and “winking” at her then Match can respond to the interesting ones and see where things go from there. This is interesting because in Megan’s article she had the opposite strategy. She discusses assertiveness in online dating and whether it’s a...

adventures in online dating
To protect the person's anonymity I'm just calling her "match".
match: OMG lol okay so ive been procrastinating on match.com
match: lol and ppl are iming me... etc
match: its a crazy little world...
match: got emails from some wierdos but also got an email from a guy that seems pretty cool although a little old
match: ha this so so weird
me: i love it
me: can i anonymously report on your progress on my blog
me: i won't mention your name
match: LOL
me: i'm just interested
match: sure
match: i mean... theres two ways i could take this.....
match: 1. i continue to just browse and send lame "winks" back at people who have 'winked' at me and caught my interest.... and refuse to do anything more... or..
match: 2. i actually go out on dates with people
match: i mean.. do i really see myself going out on dates.. blind dates?!

after college
I’ve been having a lot of conversations with various friends on this topic, and I just wanted to jot down some thoughts quickly. College provides a unique social opportunity in which you’re thrown together with a group of other people your age and endless chances to socialize are presented. A lot of people (myself included) end up finding someone they want to date long-term. Other...

landlines
The only reason anyone my age gets a landline phone is to operate the gate to their apartment complex. I have no interest in a landline. EXCEPT- I think there is still a market for a device like this one, from Verizon. The hub would have a touchscreen, and you could still use your mobile phone for a handset. If they make the hub capeable of charging the phone, I think that would be an added bonus....

caprese salad
I often make caprese salad (tomato-basil-mozzarella) as a quick lunch or dinner. Last week I tried making it with mozzarella I had bought at the regular grocery store. MISTAKE!!! I am now 100% loyal to my ciliegine mozzarella from Whole Foods. The taste difference is amazing.

random iphone tips
If you double click the “home” button, the list of “favorites” in the phone menu pops up. Attention Foodies: I got OpenTable and Zagat on my iPhone today. Great for making restaurant reservations on the fly. That brings the total number of restaurant related apps on my phone to: 4.

a dissertation on LOL
So, I had a conversation with my friend Amanda this afternoon about how people put laughter into text online. LOL is probably the most overtyped phrase there is. So, not to be outdone, here is the Katherine Merriam lexicon of hilarity. When I type _____ I mean _____. haha- what you said is mildly amusing or I don’t have a better response. I’m not actually laughing, and I’m...

pirate's booty
I am hooked on this new snack food called Pirate’s Booty. A girl in law school gave me some to try during finals and I wasn’t convinced, but after stealing a jumbo bag of it from my mom’s house this past weekend, I’m all over it. It’s like white cheddar rice cake pieces, but way more delicious. The bonus: it’s pretty good for you, compared to chips, etc.

These videos were hilarious when I found them in high school. They took the PSAs from the end of G.I. Joe commercials and re-dubbed them. I was reminiscing about them with Jason last weekend. Internet nerds know that these are CLASSIC. Go to ebaum’s world to look at the rest of them.

Palm Pre
The Palm Pre is one of the other interesting devices to come out of this year’s CES. In fact, I would go so far as to call it the most buzzed about device. It’s a smartphone that has a touchscreen and a slide out full-QWERTY keyboard. The design looks pretty sleek, and they’ve created a new OS for the phone. One of the coolest features is the charger. You can buy the...

new year's resolutions
I didn’t feel like starting Jan 1, because I was in the Napa Valley, and not in a mood to change anything about my current situation. So, first Monday back at school, here’s what I’ve got: Continue my focus on healthy lifestyle choices (whether it’s eat better, exercise more, or go to sleep on time). My goal is to try to feel good and stay healthy. Losing some weight would...
