knife skills
Also, I’ve wanted to take a knife skills class for a while now. I think it would be really helpful when I’m putzing around in the kitchen. I read an article about a cool one in Chicago. Maybe next time I’m visiting Eric, I’ll make an appointment to go with him and Emmy. Chicago Knife Skills Atlanta Knife Skills (and other classes) Now I’m really jazzed about this....

method coffee
I stopped in method with Flora the other day to buy some cupcakes for Christine while she was sick with the flu. I was really pleasantly surprised. They have Intelligentsia coffee, a brand based in Chicago that I grew to love while I was there. The baked goods come from a local lady who loves to bake, and while I haven’t tried them, they looked delicious. I’ll definitely be stopping in...

Need to Procrastinate? →
This website has fun trivia games on topics like geography, history, entertainment, sports, music, etc. If you ever want a quick time-waster that is somewhat academic, the site’s for you. Through sporcle, I’ve re-learned my world geography. That’s right kids, I can name all 195 countries of the world.

whatevs, etc
I have a friend who said, “whatevs” today, then immediately apologized for it. He was ashamed. But, then I asked him, “Is it really any better to say, ‘whatever’?” I like languages, and I like thinking about them. I’d like to think I’m a good writer, and that generally I use a varied lexicon. However, when I’m walking down the street and I...

addicted to iPhone
The other day I actually said, “I don’t know. I need my phone. I keep part of my brain in there.” I am definitely one of those obnoxious iPhone people. But when people ask me if they should get an iPhone, one of the first questions I ususally ask them is, “Are you a curious person?” I use my phone a lot because I’m curious and impatient. I want to know the...

I recently discovered my old CD binder on the floor of my room. It travels with me from apartment to apartment, but I haven’t opened it in years. Let’s see what Katherine listened to in high school, shall we? in which my foodie-ness is validated
So, I started reviewing restaurants and other local businesses on Yelp back in December. They created an iPhone app, and I started using the website as well. I know Yelp is controversial for some people. There have been payola-esque accusations. All I can say is that my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. I’m a big believer in crowdsourcing. The wisdom of the masses, etc, etc. ...

the grange public house
This is officially one of my new favorite bars in Atlanta. The Grange is tucked away on the outskirts of downtown Decatur on Ponce. It has an Irish pub atmosphere, but in a loft-ish setting. Lots of wood and exposed brick. The beer list is formidable, with lots of American craft beers and some fine Belgians as well. They even have a decent bottle selection. I like this place because it has a...

eugene mirman
Eugene Mirman is a comedian I truly enjoy. I saw him for the first time at Northwestern, when he opened for Stella. Apparently he has a book out now. I plan on obtaining that book. Anyway, because he’s funny, here’s a link to an article in The Onion’s A.V. Club where he answers reader questions about love. My favorite bit of his that I remember is one where he does pretend...

WatchWatch
This is a new video from Kanye’s latest album 808s and Heartbreaks which I am actually really enjoying now that I’ve given it a few listens. The video uses a bunch of funky new techniques with pixels. Your computer isn’t messed up, the video is just really trippy.

the violet hour
This is the classiest bar I have ever been to with the best cocktails I’ve ever had in my life. Bam! That was a whole lotta superlative. There are very few institutions that are good enough at their craft to be able to force people to jump through ridiculous hoops. The Violet Hour is one of those places. The entrance to the bar is a rough door in the side of a non-descript building,...

observation:
At dinner on Saturday night (Valentine’s Day), at graham elliot, Eric and I were seated against a wall in a line of 10 two person tables. At EVERY SINGLE TABLE, the guy was sitting in the chair and the girl was sitting in the booth. This is a thing. Trend piece, NYT now. Also: why? I pick the booth because it’s more comfy. Is this all ladies’ rationale?

Parish Foods & Goods
After spending the morning at Inman Perk, I decided to walk down the street and check out Parish Foods & Goods. There’s a restaurant upstairs, and downstairs in the back is the market. I had heard good things about the market, so I decided to check it out. There’s a small patio with some outdoor seating. Inside, there’s a communal table with stools. They have the NYTimes...

tragically hip
So, a couple friends mentioned delocater on their blogs. It’s a site that finds independent coffee shops, book stores and movie theaters in your area. In the spirit of corrie, who ventured out to a new coffee shop last weekend, I’m going to try a new one this weekend. I figure, if I have to spend my whole weekend working on a draft of a brief for law school, I might as well work on it...

Gawker re-imagines board games as movies →
In the wake of today’s announcement to make Candyland into a movie, Gawker came up with a list of possible other conversions. I love their idea for Hungry Hungry Hippos. I could totally see that being a movie.

south city kitchen
I ended up visiting two “modern southern” restaurants in the same weekend. Watershed, and after the symphony on Sunday, South City Kitchen. It was actually an interesting comparison. South City Kitchen has a decidedly “midtown” feel to it, and it’s part of an Atlanta group of restaurants owned by The Fifth Group. I happen to like most of TFG’s places. Raves:...

flip
Flip is Richard Blais’s (Top Chef) new restaurant in Atlanta. The latest restaurant trend seems to be doing a high-end burger joint. Atlanta is definitely in on the trend, as there was an hour-long wait for a table at 3:30 on a Saturday. Luckily Eric and I managed to snag bar seats in about 5 minutes (pro-tip: bar is first come first serve in most restaurants. Skip the line.) First,...

watershed
I cannot rave enough about my meal at Watershed last Friday. I’ve heard great things about the restaurant and its chef, Scott Peacock, for years. He’s a James Beard award winner, and known as an iconic chef in Atlanta. Eric and I ventured in for a casual dinner. One gripe- tiny parking lot. Owning a MINI came in handy, as we created a spot between two other cars. The service was...

what started as a joke...
…is now happening. Eric is getting me a Snuggie as a Valentine’s Day gift. I’m not really sure how to react to that one. It’s like the inside joke became reality. However, sadly, I will TOTALLY use the snuggie. I actually always have a blanket on my couch, and i sometimes sleep in a fleece. This AdAge article explains that the Snuggie hit a home run with their timing. As...

googling
I googled myself tonight (procrastinating, as ususal) and found mostly the same stuff: my website, blog, flickr, linkedin and facebook (web 2.0 what up!!) But I also found this link. Back when I worked in Topeka, KS, I covered a tornado that hit northeastern KS. CNN picked up the package, apparently. Look in the text for my name. Google describes it as :
