Up Calls and Kitchen Walls →
This is a blog written by one of my good friends from college, Eric Huang.  He’s working his way through a few kitchens right now in preparation for culinary school.  He also blogs about ultimate.  I really loved this post of his that I’m linking to, in which he discussed how cuisine is categorized. My response: I liked this post. I always have a hard time defining “New...

restaurant eugene
I don’t think I’ve ever given Restaurant Eugene a full review.  It is my absolute favorite restaurant in Atlanta.  If you have a nice occasion coming up, book a reservation here ASAP.  Chef Linton Hopkins has been nominated for buckets of awards (James Beard, Food & Wine, etc) and he does the best farm-to-table food in the city.  His menu is always full of gems, and it’s just...

leon's full service
I’ve been to Leon’s three times now, so I feel fully qualified to recommend it.  The bar/restaurant was opened by the owners of The Brick Store Pub as a slightly classier alternative.  I’m just glad it alleviates the Brick Store crowds. If possible, ask to sit outside, or enjoy a game of bocce on their courts before sitting down to dinner.  They usually have a good selection of...

hop city
I read about Hop City in a Creative Loafing column a while back, and only recently had the time to check it out this summer.  It’s a beer and wine store, but really more of a beer store.  They have a staggering selection of multiple styles of beers and also stock equipment for homebrewers. The beers are (logically) organized by style.  I tend to love Belgians, so I snapped a few photos of...

Internets
The Internet at my house is broken, and the Internet at work is pretty shoddy, so I’m backlogged on blogging for a while. I’ve had 2-3 pretty great meals deserving write-ups, notably at Abattoir and Restaurant Eugene (where I got to meet Chef Linton Hopkins). Eric was here for the fourth, and I’m going to California for a week starting next Tuesday. I finish my summer...

4th & swift
I convinced my mom to try 4th & Swift a few weeks ago for a pre-theater dinner (we saw Jersey Boys). It’s a little off the beaten path, not quite in midtown, but definitely worth a visit.  They have a deal going right now where you can pick any appetizer, entree and dessert for $35 if you come in before 6:30. This blurry pic is my salad, with clementines and vanilla.  I liked it, but...

richard blais at variety
Last weekend I took my mom to see Richard Blais do a cooking demonstration at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta.  I always loved watching Blais on Top Chef, and I was happy to see that his reality tv persona was pretty similar to how he acts in real life (or as much as being on stage can be real life).  I observed to my mom that few people come away from reality tv experiences looking good. ...

sugar cakes
Sugar Cakes is my favorite lunch spot on the square in Marietta, GA.  Our intern work crowd goes here every Tuesday for “Dainty Sandwich Day.”  The joke of it is, the sandwiches aren’t that dainty.  I usually get the ham and cheese croissant (1/2 sandwich) and a half caesar salad.  The real winner, though, are the desserts.  The chef used to work at the Ritz Carlton, and he...

hopleaf for wine? yes please.
After a long negotiation, Michael Roper of Hopleaf (5148 N. Clark St.; 773-334-9851)has purchased the La Donna (5146 N. Clark St.; 773-561-9400) property next door to his Andersonville beer haven, which he will turn into a charcuterie/wine-oriented spot with a wood-burning grill. “It’s going to be more straightforward grilled fish and meat and house-made charcuterie,” says Roper, who...
