Emmy took me to Southport Grocery and Cafe for breakfast the other morning. (We had a “hot mom” day: on a Tuesday we went out to breakfast, spent the day shopping, re-did our nails, watched gossip girl, and started drinking wine at 5pm, because this is what we believe “hot moms” do.)
The grocery/cafe is in Lincoln Park, and they’ve recently opened their sidewalk seating for the summer. The menu is full of sweet goodies, but also more savory choices like steel-cut oatmeal and omelets. Emmy had an omlet that came with some delicious smashed potatoes and a bread pudding pancake that was gooey and delightful.
For my savory dish I had fruit (drizzled in vanilla vinaigrette):

And then my sweet dish was a cupcake pancake:

That’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like it is; a pancake made with cupcake batter. It had a great fluffy texture, but tended to fall apart when dunked in syrup.
We had a nice time sitting outside chatting and watching other “hot moms” go by in their upscale workout outfits and pushing fancy strollers.
The only downside here was the service. We didn’t see much of our waiter, and after Emmy ordered her oatmeal, it took about 10 minutes to tell us they were out of the oatmeal. All in all, a cute place. I’d definitely go back, or recommend it for a relaxed brunch. The store inside had all sorts of cute gourmet goods as well. Emmy said it gets crowded on the weekends, but the protip: leave your cell number with the hostess and go browse the Anthropoligie next door.
