This post I read on Videogum today pretty much sums up my feelings on the movie. Basically, it’s one thing to laugh at a culturally-inept fake-foreigner, but it’s a whole other thing when the jokes are at the expense of a group that actually experiences discrimination in America today. Maybe I’m being too sensitive about this one, but to me, Bruno has the sad potential to cross the line into the “it’s funny because he’s super-queer” realm. I know Sacha Baron Cohen is known for edgy humor, and that it’s not his intention to make gay people look bad. I realize that sometimes awkward situations can be funny. However, this movie looks like it might just be a lot of laughs based on gay stereotypes, and that’s not something I necessarily find funny or want to support. Am I crazy?
