Cliche Pun on Book Title

eat. drink. be merry.

I just finished reading Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, and it was exactly what was promised. A version of Harry Potter with a little Brooklyn hipster mixed in and a hearty helping of Narnia. The book had two very distinct moods, the “magical boarding school” half, and the “dark, brooding adventure” half.

I generally think it was well-written, I liked the characters, and the use of obscure SAT-words was fun for a lit geek like me, but overall, the book left me feeling unsatisfied. The first half was a total page-turner and I was completely sucked in, but that made the second half feel like a letdown.

I would still recommend the book to people interested in fantasy novels, but it’s not going on my list of favorites.

…now when will A Wise Man’s Fear come out?
