So, last fall Medill had a town hall meeting where students were invited to air their grievances. Most students just aired veiled jabs at Dean Levine. My question was about the lame career services website.
Here’s an email exchange I had with Jim O’Brien this morning.
From me:
Hi,
I was just wondering, when will the new career services site be up and running? It’s been promised for months now.
Also, do you have any details on the spring career fair yet?
Jim responds:
Our site has been up and running on Medill’s new website for the last 3 and a half months. If you click on the employment link, you’ll go right to our pages. A search of Career Services on the Medill site will also yield a bunch of links to our site pages. Here’s the fastest way to get there: http://www.medill.northwestern.edu/employment/default.aspx
Medill Career Services’ Spring Career Fair is Wednesday, April 30th in the Norris Center. Registration by employers begins in February, so we’ll have many more details on who is coming and for what they will be recruiting. Why don’t you bookmark the link and check back for details, or, feel free to ask us.
Good try, but not what I was looking for:
Sorry, I was referring to the actual job search page. The “Career Cat” of Medill.
https://www2.medill.northwestern.edu/~secure/careersvcs/students/login_student.php
I was told that would be updated soon to be similar to Career Cat with resume drops online and interview scheduling online. Was that untrue?
Currently you can’t post your resume on the site, even though there’s a link where you are supposed to be able to do that. When you search jobs, it automatically brings up a list with the oldest posts at the top of the list, you have to adjust it to descending to see the newest ones. There’s a button where you’re supposed to be able to bookmark jobs or save them as favorites, but this button doesn’t work.
These were a few of my concerns with the site. I can meet with you in person if that would be more convenient.

So, we’ll see how this one plays out. Basically, I am so frustrated with the Medill career services job search site. It’s pathetic for a “technogoly focused” journalism school to have a website where you can’t even post your resume online, can’t apply for jobs online and nothing works. To apply for a job with Medill, you have to combine your resume and cover letter into one word file, name it exactly what they tell you to and email it with the exact subject line. Then to sign up for an interview you have to go to the office in person and sign up on a sheet of paper. When you meet with the interviewer, Medill doesn’t bother printing your resume out for that person, so you need another copy.
Do I seem frustrated?
