So, Medill has been going through a mini-crisis over the fact that our Dean, John Lavine, wrote a letter in the Medill magazine. It involved anonymous quotes from students with rave reviews of the new Medill curriculum. One Medill student investigated and has reason to believe the quotes are fabricated. I’ll post a link to the Tribune story explaining what’s going on.
My point is, for a while faculty, students and alums have had an axe to grind with Lavine. While I do believe there are some people who are truly offended about the Dean’s supposed “lack of ethics”, blog posts like the one linked above just bring the level of discourse down to the gutter. I don’t mean to trivialize the situation, it’s an important issue, but I think many students are just using the situation to either gain publicity or air grievances that have been stewing for a while. To clarify, this is not aimed at David Spett. I respect his reporting. I just think too many Medill blowhards are jumping on the wagon purely to serve their own interest.
