This weekend Eric, my mom and I went to DeLaCosta, a downtown Tapas restaurant.
DeLaCosta oozes hipness from the moment you walk in the door. As we pulled up to valet, a gaggle of young 20-year old women were falling out of their SUV. The interior has funky lighting with a harlequin theme. The harlequin theme sometimes bleeds over from funky to tacky. As soon as we sat down, my mom asked the waiter to turn down the music…from the live DJ. Definitely not a 50-year old hangout.

The service was predictably slow for a hip downtown spot. However, the food made up for it. We got a pitcher of white wine sangria, which wasn’t the best I’ve ever had. We started with ceviche, and while delicious, the portions were tiny.
Food improved as we moved into the meal. Appetizers we ordered included Oysters Rodriguez, Chicken Empanadas and Fish Tacos. The oysters were fried and on a bed of spinach, cheese and bacon. The chicken was marinated and baked in a pastry filling and had avacado mousse on the side. The fish tacos were marinated for 24 hours in rum and it came with four tiny ones.
Eric went on to have an entree, something with scallops, and mom and I just held out for dessert. We had the chocolate orange, some sort of chocolate chunk with cranberries and orange sherbert.
Overall, zagat-wise, I’d give it 25 for food, 15 service, 22 decor.
