Justin wanted to get Italian for dinner last night, and I had heard good things about La Tavola in Virginia Highlands. It’s a restaurant from the Fifth Group (owners of Ecco and South City Kitchen). You’ve probably heard my theory on Italian food before: it’s really hard to find bad or good Italian, most of it’s mediocre. This was surprisingly good Italian.

The menu was simple, with plenty of fresh innovative choices. Regular spaghetti was spiced up with veal meatballs. I had tagliatelle with truffle oil and mushrooms. The pasta was fresh and the mushrooms had an amazing herb seasoning on them. Their wine list is equally good. I had a glass of my favorite white (Sonoma Cutrer, Russian River chardonnay).
The interior is intimate, with exposed brick, dark wood and flickering candlelight. The music set a nice tone. This definitely feels like a date spot. I think it would be perfect for a first date, or a nicer-than-usual Friday night date.
