Cliche Pun on Book Title

eat. drink. be merry.

Right now I’m 2/3 of the way done with Eat, Pray, Love. The book had been recommended to me a few times, and I put it on hold at the library. So far, it’s been a good read. The concept is, the writer has just gone through a horrible divorce, so she decides to spend a year pursuing pleasure in Italy (eat), searching for God in India (pray) and finding balance in her life in Indonesia (love). There are some funny anecdotes, and some good pieces of advice for finding a way to be happy with yourself, but overall I can’t really get into the book.

I’ve always had a problem where if I don’t identify with at least one of the characters, it’s hard for me to like a book. In Eat, Pray, Love, the narrator/author is neurotic and depressed. These are two qualities I can’t really identify with. Although I am rather type A, I think I’m a pretty steady, normal person.

The other part of this book that I didn’t really enjoy was Gilbert’s search for God. I’m not a spiritual person, and frankly, reading about someone else’s search for enlightenment was a little bit boring.

Despite the problems I had with the book, I’d still recommend it, especially for anyone who feels like their life is a little insane, or anyone who’s about to travel.
