So, I had a conversation with my friend Amanda this afternoon about how people put laughter into text online. LOL is probably the most overtyped phrase there is. So, not to be outdone, here is the Katherine Merriam lexicon of hilarity.
When I type _____ I mean _____.
haha- what you said is mildly amusing or I don’t have a better response. I’m not actually laughing, and I’m usually in class.
ha- one side of my mouth turned up in amusement, quirky and funny
HAHAHAHAH- seriously tempted to laugh, but restraining myself because i am in class/in the library
har- you just made a bad joke/pun
lol- i only use this on the rarest of occasions when I actually do laugh out loud
Other onomatopoeias that I use online
meh- I don’t care, this is the online equivalent of a shrug
durrr- awkwardly at a loss for words
