“People who don’t eat meat are not just pale, boring, vain and flaky. They are also suffering from an eating disorder”— Giles Coren
While I don’t think that Coren is correct assuming that ALL vegetarians are disordered, I think he has a point. I can think of almost 80% of the vegetarians I know who do use it to cut out an entire group of food from their diet and starve themselves. (Think: Anyone in a sorority who is “vegetarian”). I can remember friends “going veg” for a few months to drop a shit ton of weight, and vegetarians I know who obsess over meat, bacon, etc. and constantly are pointing to the deliciously gross things on menus, encouraging others to eat what they won’t allow themselves to. So, with that being said, I agree with Cohen’s mentality which is yes, while we might eat too much meat, simply eliminating all of it from your diet is another form of starving your body of the nutrients it needs.
Thoughts?
I am certainly not attempting to pass judgment on anyone, but I don’t understand vegetarianism. I’ve had a few friends who have tried it for a while, but eventually given up on it (again, no judgment here) which seems to suggest to me that those people weren’t necessarily gung ho animal rights activists.
I think meat is delicious, and while I understand that the conditions in our slaughterhouses aren’t pristine and cuddly, that’s not going to stop me from eating meat. At a certain point you have to say to yourself, animals eat other animals, and not necessarily in the most humane way. Yes, humans have the option to make a choice, and we can survive without eating animals, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we should.
I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about what other people eat. (Again, back to Corrie’s sorority point, I watched a few girls in my sorority struggle with eating disorders, and that’s not something that’s easy to watch. I recognize that it is a disease and not a choice, but it’s hard for me to sit by and watch it happen without feeling culpable.)
At the end of the day, I just think people who are vegetarian are missing out on some delicious food.
